グラニオンはどこに – 60年にわたる謎 – 1942年（昭和17年）7月31日の朝早く、アラスカ、アリューシャン列島の最果ての島、日本占領下のキスカ島の北東約10マイルでアメリカ潜水艦Grunion号と日本の輸送船 鹿野丸が対決した(Kano Maru)。そして潜水艦は二度と戻ることはなかった。 半世紀にわたりアメリカ海軍はこの対決について何も知らず、この潜水艦と70人の乗員の運命は「戦闘中行方不明。原因は不明。」として取り扱われてきた。 60年の後、Yutaka Iwasaki氏（翻訳者で日本海軍通）の努力によりこの対決および戦場の概略位置についての記述の存在が知られるようになった。 Yutaka氏は(それ自体かなりの物語の経緯で)日本の輸送船の「監督官」が、日本のあまり知られていない海事雑誌に書いた記事を発見し、翻訳した。 そしてこの8月、グラニオン号艦長Mannert L Abeleの残された息子達が、Williamson Associates社(http://www.wassoc.com/)の支援を受け、キスカ島でサイドスキャンソナー調査を行う。 その時いったい何が起こったのか？ この調査はピクニックをするようには行かない。 現地は世界でも最悪の天候で知られる海域であり、潜水艦はほとんど１マイル近い水深下にある。 探索計画は800平方マイルの広さをカバーし、グラニオン号以外のアメリカや日本の目標物も発見を試みる予定である。 Mannert L Abele は駆逐艦の名前として知っている人がいるかもしれない。グラニオン号艦長の名前をとった米駆逐艦Mannert L Abele号は、１９４５年４月 激戦の沖縄沖でピケット任務中に、20機から30機のカミカゼおよびロケット推進の人間爆弾の同時攻撃を受けて撃沈された。 調査について詳しくは searchforthegrunion.comを、 USS Grunion号についての この稀有の物語の背景は 999info.net/Jim.pdf を見られたい。 2006å¹´7月 Bruce Abele mbabele@999info.net
