KANO MARU again went on alone in the foggy Bering sea toward KISKA.
At July 30 08:00 we reached at the north of Kiska Is. about 20 nautical miles apart. But the dense fog prevented us to approach. We were forced to drifting and waiting the fog getting thin. The fog was getting thin for a moment and back to dense. We could do nothing but waiting. This day whole day the fog was dense and we were impatient.
15:30 A friendly seaplane fighter [Pete] ditched near us and we picked up. The plane and a pilot were both safe. The pilots were so young as just graduated his boy air school, similar age of my [S.AIURA] son. I was impressed with his figures that do his duty in the Northern sky. It was a happening that our ship saved him but I was so glad that we could help him. At the evening the fog still dense, we were alerting the enemy submarine attack. 17:15 We turned outside the open ocean, under 15 knots speed maneuvering zigzag course, decided to enter the KISKA harbor next morning.

The story of Kano-maru
Kano-maru (*), a former passenger liner connecting Kobe-Marseilles- New York was hired and joined 5th fleet, which covered North Pacific stationing mainly at Shimushu Krill Islands.
She loading 1300cubicmeters construction materials at Osaka, 4 daihatus (landing vessels) at Ujina, construction materials at Maizuru and a scout plane at Ominato left for Shimushu escorted by Ishigaki.
On 27 July 1942 She arrived at Attu and then sailed for Kiska escorted by anti-sub boat 26 by turn. It was informed that US subs were active around Kiska even though the number was not so large because on 5 July a single US sub (believed to be Glower) destroyed Arare, a second class destroyer and damaged Kasumi and Shiranui.
US sub (believed to be Grunion) also destroyed anti-sub boat 25 and 27 on 10 July. This boat with the remaining 10 torpedos met Kano-maru on 31 July.
It fogged densely. She was parted with anti-sub 26 and lost the location. However, according to astronomical she was proceeding to Kiska by 15 knot after the weather improved.
All of a sudden, 2 torpedo tracks were found. One hit the starboard with the loss of generator and radio and the other escaped. It happened at 5:47. Then, a watchman found a periscope moving from the starboard bow toward the starboard astern.
Kano-maru was only equipped with two 3-inch guns and machineguns. However, guns were obsolete with 40 caliber imitated from 1880s type British Armstrong.
Her guns and machineguns fired toward an unidentified target below the surface, resulting in the waste of 80 shells.
At 5:57 one torpedo track was found but escaped below the bottom. She drifted, already unable to control and tried to pull the scout plane down desperately in the hope to rescue it as well as to expel the sub by it. However the plane failed to ignite the engine because of lack of a ship crew.
At 6:07 the US sub torpedoed another three in confidence of victory. One escaped but the other two hit the portside. This must mean the loss of Kano-maru and her all crew. They all were ready for the destiny. However, nothing happened. These two were duds.
It was not known why the US sub approached to Kano-maru 400 meters. This was probably because the captain was frustrated with the result.
The submarine appeared on the surface with her conning tower whipping. Kano-maru’s 3-inch gun reacted quickly and fourth shot hit the top of the conning tower. All crews cheered up seeing the conning tower sinking with sound of whirling and then hearing the subdued crash.
Shortly after this the seaplanes, cable-layer Ukishima and anti-sub boat 26 approached her and a freighter, Kikukawa-maru towed her to Kiska on 2 August. However, her luck did not last long. On 15 September she was air-raided and hit her bottom during her repairs. She was abandoned all. (**)
(*) Owned by Kokusai Kisen (International Steamers). 8572 gross ton.
She had been renowned for her beautiful appearance. It was noted that Prince Takamatsu (brother of Emperor) reproached Nagano, Chief of Navy General Staff saying, “The planning is wrong, the means (hiring private passenger liner, Kano-maru) is wrong and the war (against US) is wrongâ€. Nagano was permitted to leave without taking any order.
(**)Above this was based on “Submarine Attack†written by Kimata Jiro published by Kojinsha, Tokyo. The important points he picked up were confirmed by documents available in the Institute of the self-defense force of Japan and reports written by Captain Aiura Seiichi. His name was also identified by the list of 33rd naval cadet, as one of 171 graduates in November of 38th year of meiji emperor. He was supervisor of Kano-maru dispatched by Navy during this fight.
