Status Report August 24th

Posted on Friday 24 August 2007

John:

We are presently anchored in Kiska Bay. Average wind is 45 knts. Gusts to 73. And foggy..????
We spent time as a group going over pictures and documenting what we think they are. There will be an enormous amount of material, much of it very interesting. Did you get the pictures I sent?
David Gallo has put many of them in Photoshop which has enabled us the analyze them in more detail. It’s been very helpful.
We were hoping to explore the island today, but the wind is a real problem. More storms tomorrow as well. We were lucky to get as calm a period as we did last night. We are hoping to find the 25 ft bow section to see what happened. That may not be possible, but we’ll try.
We also hope to do a wreath ceremony, but the weather will be challenging.
I haven’t received any e-mails from you, but Kale has passed on the ones you sent him.

Bruce:

No photos as of 3:00 am EST. Apparent problems with the Internet as there has been an attempt to send some.

John mentioned in a SAT call that there was another boat in the harbor. Also said that as they approached the site that there was a calm spot in a rather turbulent sea and that the fog seemed to clear over that area.

I am impressed with the perseverance of the three brothers. The crew of the USS Grunion were defending America and we are grateful.

I am so impressed with all the wonderful work you have done! My uncle and godfather, Leo Bedard, was lost on the Grunion. I understand from the WBZ news story that there may be a memorial ceremony in Hawaii for the crew of the Grunion. I do hope ou give wide publicity to this. I know many people will be interested in attending. My thoughts and prayers stay with. Isabelle

Our whole family has been following the Blog and pictures daily and is amazed at the details you all got. I wanted to thank you all for your persistence over the years to locate the final resting place of the USS Grunion, I know it wasn’t easy. I had a question about determining what caused the sinking of the sub, do you have enough video to make a determination? Keep up the amazing work and if there’s anything we can do to help you from home as you’re out to sea, let us know. Keep those pictures coming, thanks again.
