The Grunion story is scheduled to air next week — on Thursday, September 20th. Right now it’s slotted to hit about 8:15 in the morning. That’s 8:15 in every time zone. Including Alaska. Of course, plans could change between now and then, but I’ll keep you posted.

My cousin Sue Strobel has been keeping me up-to-date on this exciting discovery. Our uncle, Kenneth Hall was only on the ship a couple of weeks before she was lost. We have both heard from our grandmother (his mother) and our parents, what a tragic event this was for so many families. But, even in that sad time, your mother took the time to write each next of kin of her sympathy for our lost loved one. She must have been quite a woman to have given so much of herself when she herself was mourning her own loss.
Our family appreciates the tanicity you showed in your push to find the Grunion.
    Sincerely,
    Cady Wight

I knew Melvin Walter, a crewman aboard the Grunion. I vividly remember when the word came down that the Grunion was lost. I have two cousins that are also Mevin’s cousins, who were born after 1942. i’ve had the Grunion in mind all my life, and after buying my first computer, I found the history of the submarine on the internet. I shared that information with my cousins, and on a trip to Hawaii a few years ago, they saw a memorial of some type at Pearl Harbor that paid tribute to the Grunion and its crew.

All of us are excited about the search for, and the finding of the Grunion. Thanks Abele brothers for all the effort you’ve put into the search, and for all you’ve done for the families of the crewmen who were lost.

Congratulations on your efforts. Your dad was a true hero and it is a shame that the task to find him was left to you.
    God Bless.
