Most of you are aware that there was a destroyer, USS Mannert L Abele launched April 1944, named to honor the men of the Grunion
That destroyer was sunk April 12, 1945 by a hoard (30) Japanese kamikazes (suicide planes).
One of the officers on that destroyer, Roy Andersen, has written a book about that experience called
“Three Minutes off Okinawaâ€. In my opinion it is an extraordinary book

The book is finally off the press and can be obtained in the United States for $30.00 (which includes shipping and handling in the United States) by sending a check along with your address and other contact information to

Also for those who have Smithsonian Channel there is a TV documentary about that experience. Smithsonian Channel HD is available on Direct TV channel 267
The documentary is “The Day of the Kamikaze” and it will be aired Veteran’s Day, November 11, 9:30 to 11:00 pm on the Smithsonian Channel. The channel is brand new and we have no knowledge of what networks will offer it.
Smithsonian Channel HD is available on Direct TV channel 267.
“True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” Arthur Ashe
As we remember on this Veterans’ Day, we pause to reflect all of the recent happenings with the USS Grunion and most of all, the wonderful gathering in Boston in October. We have all been personally touched by this amazing story and we thank the Abele brothers for, not only, their hospitality in Boston, but also for their faithfulness and generosity to the
Grunion
“The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example.”
