Dear Mary,
I will be glad to help you as much as I can. First I want to tell you that this was a major joint effort with the two other sub ladies who were onboard before I was. To quote Rhonda in USA Today “The thing is, Vickie, Mary and I all have various ways of going about the search, and it is that combination that made this a success.” Everyone agrees the project was a trial-and-error thing.”
Our working relationship worked out so well. Rhonda Raye was the lead on this and we worked very well together. I’ll be glad to talk to you.

I have so many questions for how you went about locating all the families of the seventy lost men. I’d like to do the same thing for the descendants of my father’s lost boat. I actually put a few ads in submarine mags. (Polaris, etc.) and message boards about nine years ago, but got no tips. So I’m left with the list of crew and their fragmentary (and temporary) addresses from 1943(!) I look forward to meeting you and perhaps corresponding with you. My e-mail: MLFowler@maine.rr.com

Recently the Wabash Plain Dealer wrote an article on Charles Roy Hutchinson, and also paid tribute to Daniel Emery Allen. From the first call to Wabash Plain Dealer editor, Joe Slacian, and in conversations soon thereafter with reporters, Sheila Rhoades and Bob Bryan, I just knew this would be an excellent, well thought through article written with care and love. In my experience with newspapers across the country, 99% do an outstanding job of good, solid journalism. I always make a point on behalf of the entire Grunion family to thank each of the reporters and their editors for caring so deeply. This week, Wabash Plain Dealer did something unique. They separated the story into a series of three articles and ran one each day.
“Brothers Beat the Odds, Find Wreckage of Father’s Submarine 65 Years After Disappearance”
“Sub Lady’ Working Hard To Make Sure Story Is Told”
“Chance Telephone Call Rekindles Old Memories”

One of my submarine veterans of WWII friends just alerted me to the Undersea Enterprise Daily’s reprint of a newspaper article from an Indiana newspaper about the little sister of Charles Kime, a 25 year old crewman of the Grunion. It told about Ms. Kime getting a phone call (from the sub-ladies?) about Grunion’s discovery. And then her and her family receiving the vial of water from the site. It gave me chills! What an amazing effort you guys have made.
